How I Kicked Depression (and You Can Too)

Here we go…I started becoming very depressed in my 20s.  It seemed to happen on its own, like a dark cloud rolling in.  I began to withdraw from people.  I didn’t feel like doing much of anything.  Except sleep.  And, hoarding bad memories.  I got tired of feeling this way so I started taking an anti-depressant.  At first it seemed to work, but I still didn’t feel like doing anything.   I felt very much like a foggy-headed zombie.  So, I switched to a different one and it was great.  I began feeling motivated about getting stuff accomplished.  I felt like I was in a much better mood.   But, I really didn’t want to take an antidepressant for the rest of my life.  Because even while taking it, I still had bouts of depression.

So one day, I decided to go to a yoga class at a studio nearby.  I’ve heard positive things about yoga and wanted to give it a shot.  While in class, the instructor said something that just clicked inside of me… It was while we were focusing on our breaths.   After breathing in “life, all the positivity…” she said “let it go”.  So, I did.  I let it all go… I let go of all the negativity that I’ve ever held on to.  And, it has brought me so much peace inside of my spirit.   After that day, I never felt depressed again.

Now, don’t get me wrong… I still have bad days.   I just choose to let go of the negativity instead of dwelling about it like before.  It has definitely made living life better.

If the thought of going to a yoga class makes you anxious, you can try this video in the comfort of your own home.  I really love Yoga With Adriene’s videos!!!  If yoga isn’t your thing, try meditating with this video.
